Upon discovering the springs, Esterly’s vision was supported by Dr. Benjamin Rush, who declared the spring water healthful. Inspired by the spa town of Harrogate in England, Esterly named the neighborhood Harrowgate. Over the years, Harrowgate has evolved significantly. From its initial recognition as a spa town, it has grown into a bustling neighborhood. The spring dried up around 1800, but the neighborhood continued to flourish.
