Tracing the Roots: A Glimpse into Harrowgate’s History

The roots of Harrowgate can be traced back to 1784 when it was founded by Capt. George Esterly, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Esterly discovered springs in the vicinity of what is now Kensington Ave. and Tioga St., which led to the establishment of a spa and the foundation of Harrowgate.  Upon discovering the springs, Esterly’s vision was supported by Dr. Benjamin Rush, who declared the spring water healthful. Inspired by the spa town of Harrogate in England, Esterly named the neighborhood Harrowgate. Over the years, Harrowgate has evolved significantly. From its initial recognition as a spa town, it has grown into a bustling neighborhood. The spring dried up around 1800, but the neighborhood continued to flourish.
