Must-See Movies Set in Philadelphia

There have been some remarkable films made about the City of Brotherly Love. This compilation is by no means exhaustive, but here are some of the best movies filmed in Philadelphia. You’ve probably seen or heard of them… and if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?

Rocky

No other movie could top the list of iconic films more than Rocky. It not only demonstrated the fighting spirit of the people of Philadelphia, but also skyrocketed Sylvester Stallone’s career. The Rocky series has had a great influence on the city, with some even suggesting that it has done more for Philadelphia than anything else recently. The Academy Award-winning song “Streets of Philadelphia” was composed by Bruce Springsteen for the movie.

The Sixth Sense

Sixth Sense is a film that was released in 1999 and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment. The story follows a troubled boy who is able to see and talk to the dead, and a child psychologist who tries to help him. The film was a massive success, bringing in over $672 million at the box office. It is a movie that follows the story of a young boy who has the ability to see and communicate with the dead. It is a supernatural thriller that explores the themes of loss and redemption.

An absolute sensation, M. Night Shyamalan’s initial thriller was set and filmed in Philadelphia, setting the city firmly on the cinematic map. Audiences were enthralled with the plot, featuring Bruce Willis in the role of a child psychologist on a mission to assist a struggling individual, played by Haley Joel Osment. The conclusion was certainly a surprise to everyone.

Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook provided a highly realistic take on South Philly life, comparable to what was seen in Rocky. The way the Solitano family lives and breathes the Eagles’ success is something everyone who devotes their Sundays to the team each year can relate to. This award-winning movie, featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, scooped up Oscars and Golden Globes. As a fun fact, the diner shown in the film is the Llanerch Diner in Upper Darby.

The 2005 drama “In Her Shoes” follows the story of two sisters who have a strained relationship and how their lives intersect and improve as a result. The movie highlights the importance of family, friendship, and understanding.

In Her Shoes, a movie taking place in Center City, features Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette in a story of sibling rivalry. Despite their differences, the two sisters share one thing in common – their shoe size. Living together leads to a series of comical misfortunes that drive the siblings apart. Thankfully, it’s the intervention of their grandmother that reunites the family.

Best In Show

This comical mockumentary gives viewers a look into the fictional world of dog show in a Philadelphia hotel.  If you have not seen Best In Show,  seek it out. It’s a classic comedy created by the same director who made This Is Spinal Tap.

Critics paid little notice to the movie version of the Broadway show, however it is an enjoyable and endearing tale about the formation of the United States. Taking place in Philadelphia, audiences are given the opportunity to become acquainted with the human side of the figures such as Jefferson, Adams, and the memorable Benjamin Franklin.

Trading Places

Trading Places is a comical illustration of the events that transpire when a rich businessman from Society Hill has his world flipped upside down and a streetwise con-man is given the opportunity to experience the life of luxury – all for the sake of a $1 bet. This cinematic work of art features Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy as the targets of a cunning plan.

Twelve Monkeys

Starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, this sci-fi thriller is set in Philadelphia. An alarming plague has taken the world by storm, and the way the movie captures the city is truly bone-chilling. City Hall’s post-apocalyptic view is not one I ever want to look at again! Especially eerie are the scenes featuring Eastern State Penitentiary, which are unnerving even in the brightest sunlight.

The Woodsmen

Lee Daniels, a producer from Philadelphia, created a great film titled The Woodsman which features local actor Kevin Bacon. As you get to know Bacon’s character—a newly released prisoner convicted of pedophilia—you will feel the suspense and tension that makes this movie so special.
